First Self-healing Polymer That Requires No External Intervention

The "Terminator" polymer: I'll be back

Scientists report the first self-healing thermoset elastomer that requires no intervention to induce its repair. Self-healing polymers mend themselves by reforming broken cross-linking bonds. An industrially familiar, permanently cross-linked poly(urea–urethane) elastomeric network was demonstrated to completely mend itself after being cut in two by a razor blade. It is the metathesis reaction of aromatic disulphides, which naturally exchange at room temperature, that causes regeneration.

Introduction to Quantum Dots

Introduction to Quantum Dots

Laurie King at Imperial College London introduces us to quantum dots. Special nanocrystals called quantum dots absorb UV light and emit the energy as visible light in the form of a colour. The colour depends on the size of the quantum dot. Smaller dots are green and larger dots are red. Quantum dots can be used in solar cells as they absorb light from the sun and can also emit the energy as electrical energy.

Programmable Glue Made Of DNA Directs Tiny Gel Bricks To Self-assemble

Sep 9, 2013
Programmable glue made of DNA directs tiny gel bricks to self-assemble A team of researchers at the Wyss Institute of Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University has found a way to self-assemble complex structures out of bricks smaller than a grain of salt. The new method could help solve one of the major challenges in tissue engineering: creating injectable components that self-assemble into intricately structured, biocompatible scaffolds at an injury site to help regrow human tissues. The key to self-assembly was developing the world's first programmable glue. The glue is made of DNA, and it directs specific bricks of a water-filled gel to stick only to each other, the scientists report in the September 9 online issue of Nature Communications....read more

The Future of Design

The Future of Design

SpaceX is exploring methods for engineers to accelerate their workflow by designing more directly in 3D. We are integrating breakthroughs in sensor and visualization technologies to view and modify designs more naturally and efficiently than we could using purely 2D tools. We are just beginning, but eventually hope to build the fastest route between the idea of a rocket and the reality of the factory floor. Special thanks to Leap Motion, Siemens and Oculus VR, as well as NVIDIA, Projection Design, Provision, and to everyone enabling and challenging the world to interact with technology in exciting new ways.

Zip Bags from Japan

Tim bought these Japanese Zip Bags back in 1984, and as well as being fun, they are an interesting example of topology! Essentially a long strip of tough fabric with an attached zip, when you do the zip up, it becomes a useful bag. Depending on the distance from the start of the zip to the end of the strip, 4 different shapes of bag are possible. In addition, you can even combine 2 strips, to make a bigger bag.
